The Role

Reporting to the Director of Payroll, the Payroll Manager is responsible for managing and approving timely and accurate regular and off-cycle payroll processing for a multi-state company.  This role ensures that the company remains compliant with payroll laws and regulations, leads the team through year-end activities, including tax statements, and provides expertise and guidance to the payroll team as well as to the organization. The Payroll Manager continuously looks for opportunities to streamline processes and provides recommendations to senior management. The Manager optimizes the contribution of the team through coaching and assessment and maintain internal controls. In addition, the Manager ensures the maintenance of all necessary supporting documents.  

The Manager must also be able to assess how to effectively leverage the HCM systems’ functionalities and answer questions posed by business partners in HR and by individual team members. Because this position requires interaction with internal business partners it requires excellent collaboration skills.  Additionally, the Manager manages the day to day operations of payroll through the department ticketing system, including answering tickets, monitoring queues and leveraging the functionality of the tool to provide a good experience to business partners and team members.

 

What you'll do

  • Oversee the processing of multi-state payroll for all US team members using WH&R Payroll system, ensuring all payroll processing is carried out in an accurate, compliant, efficient, and expedient manner.
  •  Oversee some of the payroll tax function (jurisdictional account registration, W-2C amendment processing with ADP, tax notices, SUI rate analysis, relocation).
  •  Solve payroll related issues, respond to payroll related inquiries and enforce payroll policies; Collaborate with internal business partners on payroll-related issues.
  •  Comply with internal controls in a SOX environment and facilitate testing of those controls.
  • Update Payroll SOPs as needed.

 

You'll be successful if you have

  • Deep knowledge of payroll tax laws and compliance.
  • Ability to analyze issues related to payroll and assist team in providing timely solutions.
  •  Ability to execute necessary programs to support payroll processes.
  • Ability to evaluate business partner needs and answer questions effectively and accurately.
  •  Ability to manage own work on multiple projects\tasks concurrently.
  • Able to work flexible/extended hours when necessary, especially to support Payroll processes.
  • Strong team spirit.
  • Ability to function effectively and efficiently in a busy work environment, to handle stress, and to communicate with competence and kindness under pressure.
  • Ability to assess sense of urgency and prioritization of work.
  • Ability to be proactive with regard to problem resolution.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Experience with ADP Enterprise V5 or V6.
  • Experience with UKG Workforce Central.
  • Efficient using Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Efficient using collaboration tools such as Zoom, Teams and Smartsheet.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • College degree preferred. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).  Experience will be accepted for the education requirement.
  • Significant experience with Payroll business processes. 
  • Significant experience with Payroll/Timekeeping technology.
  • 5 to 7 years in payroll administration including managerial experience.
